About Us

At Good Shepherd, we value diversity. Our mission statement, in its brief form, says it well: Embracing the diversity of God's creation and celebrating our oneness in Christ. We embrace diversity by welcoming all people regardless of race, nationality, marital status, family composition, sexual orientation, gender-identity, socioeconomic status, or physical ability. In embracing diversity we seek to be a bridge of understanding among people, to live in the creative tension of differences, to be a blessing to a community and a world where dialogue, understanding and collaboration among diverse people is needed. What to expect

Our friendly community is diverse, lively, informal and filled with children. We are gay, straight, young, old, and multi-ethnic. Our goal is a warm welcome that stays with you long after you leave.

Worship changes frequently with many different kinds of music, from classical to contemporary. We enjoy jazz, blues and gospel worship. The service is liturgical, filled with music, and easy to follow in the bulletin. While the two worship services are very similar, special music generally happens at the later service.

Weekly communion is open to all with a choice of wine and grape juice, bread and gluten free wafers.

Daytimers

Within an hour of Oak Park there are LOTS of places to explore. Daytimers is open to anyone who has free time in the day and can join us for each event. The group takes trips to local sights followed by a meal. Contact the office to make your RSVP. Check out these upcoming dates:

March 11, 2020 - Garfield Park Conservatory

We look forward to the time when we can once again meet and explore new places!

Kidz Express

Kidz Express was founded as part of Good Shepherd's social ministry in 1997 to move forward in faith by providing programs and services for students in Austin. Today Kidz Express is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization; however, it remains closely partnered with Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. While programming for over 60 children takes place each weekday and for the bulk of the summer, volunteers are always needed on Tuesday nights at 6pm to help with tutoring. To volunteer at Kidz Express please talk with Pastor Kathy or go to: www.kidzexpress.org. Read more »

Reformation 500 Celebration!

Reformation Sunday, 2017, was the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his 95 theses on the door of the Castle church in Wittenberg, Germany. At Good Shepherd we have been celebrating this historic event in various ways to focus on what the Reformation means.

We began our celebration year on Oct. 30, 2016 at Thatcher Woods Pavilion where we shared a meal, had some fun dressing up and taking pictures with a photo booth, and held a silent auction. We held a potluck and Jell-O cook-off in November. What is a Lutheran potluck without Jell-O? During the Education hour, adults started at the beginning with a Lutheran Basics class and discussed how the German political scene at the time influenced Luther. Read more »

Vacation Bible School

Good Shepherd Vacation Bible School is held the third week of June. In 2020 our dates will be June 22-26, 5-8pm. Registration will begin in early May.

Our VBS begins with a meal, then students move through rotations which include music, games, science, and drama. VBS is open to students that are 3 years old through outgoing fifth graders.

Questions can be directed to Deaconess Debbie Speer.

What to wear

This is easy. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Good Shepherd is an informal church. You can expect to see people wearing jeans (or shorts in the summer) and other casual wear. Festival Sundays, such as Easter and Christmas, you might find people in suits and dresses. Whatever you wear will fit in at Good Shepherd.

ELCA Youth Gathering

Once every three years, Lutheran youth from across the US (and around the world) come together as one large community. For five days, we worship, serve, play, pray, commune, laugh, cry, dance and sing together, 30,000 strong! It is a youth experience unlike any other!

It's hard to believe, but planning for the 2021 is just around the corner. And fundraising for this event is ongoing. Stay tuned for updates as we look to YG2021 in MINNEAPOLIS!!

When to arrive

Most people arrive only a few minutes before worship. Pastor Kathy is found in the lobby 15 minutes before worship with a warm smile to greet you. Greeters and Ushers can help answer your questions.

We have two worship services, at 8:00am and 10:30am from Labor Day through Memorial Day. Summer worship is at 9:30am only. A time for coffee and conversation is found after the second worship service when there are two.

Make a Difference in the Life of a Child

What a privilege it is to share God's story with our young people! Our rotation model of Sunday School means that you prepare your lesson once and then teach it 1-3 weeks to different age groups of children. Materials are provided and team-teaching is encouraged! For more information, please contact Deaconess Debbie. Check out the online sign up here. Thank you!

Looking for a Church for Your Marriage?

Good Shepherd recognizes that love is a gift from God for LGBT couples and heterosexual couples.

As a Christian congregation we celebrate with couples who have found a life-long partner and wish to make a binding commitment to one another. We happily perform wedding services for all couples. Wedding preparation guidelines for all couples include three counseling sessions. Please contact Pastor Kathy for more information and a copy of our Wedding Guidelines.

Donate to Building for Mission

A fire in the roof rapidly spread through the attic in September 2018. Smoke and water damage affected every part of the building, furnishings and personal property. The cost of rebuilding, replacing and modernizing the structure and effects is over $3 million.  While insurance covers some costs, more than $1 million is the responsibility of the congregation. We continue to seek funds for the modernization. Would you like to donate towards the effort? This link will take you to the donation page.

For those with children

We are a family-friendly congregation. Children are welcome to attend worship with you and you're welcome to sit near the front so they can see better - or to sit anywhere you like. Ask the ushers for the books, crayons and toys for quiet play if it is helpful. If you prefer, we offer professional nursery care for pre-schoolers during the 10:30am service (or 9:30am in summer).

Every service, younger children are invited to come forward to listen to a short children's message and receive an activity bulletin. While communion instruction happens around 2nd grade, all baptized children are invited to commune. We leave the choice of communion or blessing for each child to her or his parents.

Good Shepherd PrayGround

Good Shepherd values our children! When we return to our renovated space, we will once again have a Prayground space front and center.

What's a "Prayground"? It's a dedicated space in our church where little ones (suggested for ages 5 and under) can play, color and explore. It's a space where they can see and hear the pastor and worship leaders clearly. And it's a place where the congregation can celebrate the joy that your child--wiggles, noises and all--brings to our congregation!

In the meantime, look for activity bags for children as well as a staffed nursery during our worship service at the First Baptist temporary location.
