CROP Walk

Sunday, May 6, 2018 - 2:00pm - 4:00pm

It's spring ... birds, tiny flowers and time for the CROP Walk.  Since 2005, Good Shepherd has raised over $25,000!  Let's keep it going.  Our goal is to raise $3500 this year. Click here to sign up for the walking team or to donate. Remember, some of the money we raise goes to local food banks, other monies go to Lutheran World Hunger and worthy agencies around the globe. On May 6th registration begins at 1pm at Pilgrim Congregational on Lake Street and the walk begins at 2pm.

United Power

United Power is the nation's first and largest newtwork of multi-faith, broad-based citizens' organizations with 7 decades of experience winning tough batles on housing, health care, education, living wages, and immigration rights. Currently they are working on issues of mental health: creating alternatives to pushing the mentally ill into the prison pipeline, Housing in Chicago: reclaiming foreclosed housing on the southside and Gun Violence: working to change manufacturing.

Hurricane Disaster Relief

It is estimated that 850,000 people were displaced by Hurricane Harvey. Sixty percent of the people in Florida were affected by Hurricane Irma. Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands were destroyed. While the water is beginning to recede in some areas, the devastation will last for many years. There are many wonderful agencies that need your money and are involved in the relief and restoration effort. Lutheran Disaster relief is an agency that will be there for the long haul. As a secondary responder they stay active for years helping people through the many stages towards renewed life. Give now. Give generously. Give here.

Kidz Express

Kidz Express was founded as part of Good Shepherd's social ministry in 1997 to move forward in faith by providing programs and services for students in Austin. Today Kidz Express is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization; however, it remains closely partnered with Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. While programming for over 60 children takes place each weekday and for the bulk of the summer, volunteers are always needed on Tuesday nights at 6pm to help with tutoring. To volunteer at Kidz Express please talk with Pastor Kathy or go to: www.kidzexpress.org. Read more »

Kidz Express tutors: an hour a week to change a life

Kidz Express, the after school program in Austin started by Good Shepherd members, is seeking volunteers to tutor elementary school students on Tuesdays from 6:00 – 6:45 pm.  Anyone ages 13 or older is welcome, and rides can be provided.  Tutoring occurs at the Kidz Express center at 5221 Congress, Chicago. For more information, to sign up, or to join the carpool, contact Pastor Kathy, Duane Ehresman, Warren King, or Lynn Railsback.

PADS - Weekly Breakfast

West Suburban PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) is a division of the larger nonprofit organization, Housing Forward. PADS provides meals and overnight shelter for the homeless in West Suburban Cook County. It operates for eights months of the year. Volunteers from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church purchase and deliver breakfast each Tuesday during the shelter season. For information, contact William Peterman.

Lutherans Stand Up for Immigrants

Good Shepherd works with PASO and AMMARO

Whether Bishop Eaton, Bishop Miller, youth at the National Gathering or countless other individuals, Lutherans are standing up for immigrants. All affirm the concern for the wellbeing of vulnerable migrants who cross our borders fleeing from danger and threats to their lives. Good Shepherd continues to move forward on this issue as they work with both PASO and AMMPARO. Here are some suggestions on what you can do:

PRAY: Pray for the safety of migrants. Your pray stirs both your heart and God's.

Attitudes Towards Differences: The Riddle Scale

Good Shepherd rests securely in the "Nurturance" section of the Riddle Scale when it comes its welcoming stance towards GLBT people. We assume that diversity in sexual orientation within our community is indispensible. We view differences with genuine affection and delight and are advocates of those differences. See where you are on the attached Riddle Scale.

Monthly Breakfast Staffing for PADS

In addition to bringing breakfast for the Tuesday PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter), a crew from Good Shepherd staffs the breakfast shift on the 4th Monday of the month at Euclid United Methodist. This dedicated crew meets at 5am and leaves around 7am with plenty of time to get to work. To make it easy there are instructions and a list of supplies. Breakfast for the homeless is our way of following Jesus in helping the "widows, orphans and oppressed". Talk to crew leader Eric Wegener for more information.
