No Food Waste Holidays

Food Waste currently takes up 20% of landfill by weight. It is the largest single municipal waste source. The methan released by food is a greenhouse gas 21 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. This November we commit to reducing food waste within our homes. Start by taking the Food Waste Challenge found as an attachment. You can also go to the EPA website for information. Think about these changes in your habits:

  • Find recipes that use leftovers and label them "use first" in the frig.
  • Bring your own containers to restaurants. When hosting parties send guests home with the extra food if it is too much for you. Share meals with friends when you have bumper crops.
  • Shop with a list that begins with an inventory of your perishable foods. Don't over buy. Use up what you have with recipes created for those last bits of food.
